The 40 Hz modulated signal is based on the observation that a 40 Hz signal appears in EEG recordings taken both during normal, waking consciousness, and during REM sleep, but not in dreamless sleep, when we’re closest to being unconscious. It has been called the “binding factor” for human consciousness, including states of consciousness.

In other words, it’s present whenever we are conscious. The name “binding factor” for human consciousness, suggests that this is the activity that “holds it all together”. The modulated 40 Hz signal is almost in sync with the brain’s own binding factor, but not quite. It’s just different enough to interact with it; to disturb it slightly. When that happens, changes happen that are as much alterations in consciousness itself as they are of “states of consciousness”.

The speed at which it circles through the 8 pairs of coils is also designed to interact with the binding factor by moving the signals from one pair to the next at almost the same frequency the binding factor sweeps through the brain. Just different enough in frequency to deflect the binding factor instead of just being masked by it.
